Can't Uninstall Skype? Stop it from Running Instead

Published on April 12, 2015 Last reviewed on April 12, 2015

Office 365 for Business installs Skype for Business (aka Lync) and you cannot uninstall it. However, you can prevent it from running when Windows starts, which is sufficient for many users as it gets it out of their face. This leaves it installed, should you ever need to join a meeting hosted on Skype for Business or Lync.

To keep it from running when Windows boots, click the Gear icon and select Tools, then Options.

Select Personal on the left and deselect the option to Automatically start the app when I log on to Windows.

You can actually uninstall Skype for Business. This is at least how it can be done on my copy of Office Professional Plus 2013:

Add / Remove programs => Microsoft Office 2013 => Modify => Set Microsoft Lync as unavailable. Lync has been rebranded to Skype For Business recently but Microsoft didn't bother to update Office installer accordingly, hence the product name confusion.

It depends on the suite - if you have a "click to run" installation you can't uninstall lync/s4b, but if you have the MSI available to volume licenses and msdn subscribers, you can uninstall any of the applications.

C2R users (which is the vast majority) are limited to uninstall and repair unless their admin uses OCT to control what gets installed.

This doesn't work on the 2016 version. You simply have to stop it from running.
