Disable Control Panel UAC

Published on May 6, 2010 Last reviewed on June 1, 2016

Vista's User Access Control is annoying, especially when you are installing new software or tweaking hardware settings. you can disable it completely in User Accounts or set a local security policy which disables it for Control panel access only.

Click Start, Control Panel, Administration tools (it's in the Security and Maintenance group), then Local Security Policy.

Browse to Local Policies, Security Options, and scroll down to "User Account Control: Behavior of the elevation prompt for administrators in Admin Approval Mode". Double-click the title and in the dialog box change its setting from "Prompt for Consent" to "Elevate without prompting." Click OK.

Once you do this, you won't receive any of the UAC warnings when you attempt to use Control panel applets. Even though you receive the (bogus) warning from the Windows Security Center that UAC is turned it off, its not. It's still there, and all your processes will still run as a standard user. When a process is marked for elevation the request will be silently approved rather that bugging the user with an annoying 'are you sure' type prompt.
